Safeguarding children / adults:

- It is a clinician’s responsibility to initiate a report in any safeguarding issue (adult or child) as per safeguarding policy (found on Clinical Toolkit / Radar).
- Copies of all reported incidents are to be passed to safeguarding leads – this will be a GP Lead for your service or Head of Nursing and AHP in the IUC service.
Prevent:
Prevent training is intended to support staff to identify and report individuals at risk of being radicalised into violent extremism. Concerns should be reported to the Prevent Lead for your service – this will be the GP Lead for your service or Head of Nursing and AHP in the IUC service.
Conflict management:
If you are confronted with a potentially conflicting situation, please remember:
- Not to get defensive, argumentative or emotional
- Not to take it personally
- To be aware of your body language
- If handled well it can turn out to be positive later
- To call a colleague or senior manager on duty for additional support where necessary
Customer service:
- Put yourself in the patient’s place. How would YOU want to be treated? How can you go the extra mile?
- Actively listen to what the patient wants to say without interrupting.
- Let them know that you’ve heard what they’ve said by acknowledging the points they made and repeating it back to them.
- If you can’t do what they ask, EXPLAIN why. Don’t be defensive, but explain the reasons you may not be able to help.
- REFLECT! When a conversation goes well, think about why that was. What made the difference? If the interaction doesn’t go well, try and think how you could have helped achieve a different outcome. Be open minded to thinking about the words you chose or your tone of voice. Ask those around you, or if the interaction was a telephone call, it can be helpful to listen to a recording.
