If you work a shift that covers all or part of the overnight period, you must ensure that you report for duty refreshed and fit for work.
All staff (clinical and operational) and sessional workers are expected to stay awake throughout their shift. Sleeping whilst on duty not only presents a risk to patient safety but is also a serious breach of the code of conduct.
It is expected that any incidences of sleeping on duty be reported to the shift manager or on-call manager so that it can be addressed with the individual concerned.
If, however, a member of the team feels that they would benefit from a short nap during a designated break, this can (and must) be discussed and agreed with the shift manager. It should be for the duration of the break only and the individual will report back to the shift manager after an agreed length of time.
During quiet overnight periods it is not acceptable for members of staff or sessional workers to remain in consulting rooms with the door closed. All team members must be contactable at all times.
If you work regular night shifts and find it difficult to stay awake during your shifts, please discuss with your line manager so that alternative working patterns can be explored.
