The Severnside professional line is a service that is open to registered Healthcare professionals, e.g:

  • GPs
  • Paramedics
  • Community nurses
  • Pharmacists
  • Nurses in Nursing Homes (ie registered nurses NOT Healthcare assistants)
  • Urgent Treatment Centre/ Minor Injury Units

The professional line is open 24 hours a day with different functions depending on time of the day and day of the week.

Between 08.00 and 18.30 Mon – Fri, the calls are answered by call handlers working in the Weekday Professional Line Team based at Osprey Court.

The call handler will warm transfer (where possible) the call to a clinician who is able to provide medical support advice and facilitate admission where needed.

During the out of hours period the calls are answered by call handlers (including WACCs and shift managers) at either Marksbury Road or Osprey Court.  The call handler adds the case to the queue for a clinician to call the caller back.

The out of hours clinicians calls the caller who is seeking clinical advice on patient care.  For example:

  • To support a paramedic making clinical decisions and help avoid unnecessary admissions to hospital or a conveyances to hospital Emergency Departments..
  • To support community nurses with prescribing
